Premium Ostrich Plumes

Premium wing plumes, natural colour and 4 grades. Did you know that 99% of what we get in fly tying is a by product of feather dusters ? That breed of Ostrich (the one for feather dusters) is bred for its short stiff barbs with very fluffy barbules and short Rachis. These ones are different.. they are longer overall, they have longer Barbs and in general a lot less fluffy barbules.. perfect for large baitfish flies. Sourcing these took a lot of emails, and a lot of explaining to find a farm that had a breed of bird that fit the description we wanted for palmered Ostrich Hollow Fleyes, Feather Wings and Flatwings.. but finally they are here. 

Due to the length, we will need to cut them in half to fit them into a bag. Yes, that is a 30cm Ruler (12” Ruler) in the pictures. 

• Grade 1 - Mostly flawless feathers of the most length. Some discolouration and some worn ends.
• Grade 2 - Mainly excellent quality and length, some areas at the end that have worn off as the bird matures. Length of barbs is great.
• Grade 3 - Long barbs but a lot of damaged feathers. Around 60% usable. About the yeild of a normal fly tying ostrich drab. Can be long barbs, some plumes have different length barbs on each side of the Rachis
• Grade 4 - Mainly here because the length of barbs are not as long as the Grade 1 and 2 (see photo). Some missing or damaged barbs. An economy plume or for smaller flies (or shorts for chins)

Feel free to ask for a type, we will do our best to provide. If you don’t ask, we grab one randomly from the grades. At this stage, we aren’t dying them.. but if you do want them dyed, we could do that for a fee.
